FAQ: Can I Put Garden Waste in a Skip?.

One of our most frequently asked questions is: Can I put garden waste in a skip? The answer is yes. Garden waste, also known as green waste, is biodegradable material from the outdoors, and it's perfectly suitable for disposal in a skip.

Green waste skips are typically hired for site clearances, garden projects, or landscaping jobs. At Dunmow Group, we offer skips dedicated to this waste type, which are more cost-effective than mixed waste skips.

Green Waste Can Include:

  • Small branches
  • Grass
  • Hedge Trimmings
  • Branches or twigs
  • Turf
  • Leaves
  • Small amount of soil (up to 2%)

Loading Your Skip

We provide a variety of green waste skips, ranging in size from 2 to 12 yards. No soil is permitted in an 8-yard skip or any skip larger. Here are some examples to help you choose the right size for your project:

  • Small Projects: A 2-yard skip is ideal for minimal waste like hedge trimmings and grass.
  • Medium Projects: A 6-yard skip is suitable for moderate landscaping work.
  • Large Projects: A 12-yard skip is perfect for significant clearances and bigger garden jobs.

Drop Door Skips

For added convenience, we also have a limited number of 6-yard drop-door skips available. These are particularly useful for loading waste with a wheelbarrow or by hand. Make sure to request this option when booking your green waste skip or book online.

Loading A Skip

To maximise the space in your skip, layer lighter waste, such as leaves and grass, at the bottom. Break down branches or twigs so they are smaller. We also recommend placing heavier waste, such as soil or turf, on top to help push the rest of the waste down. This also helps prevent the lighter material from blowing out of the skip.

Follow the level load markers on the side of the skip to avoid overloading it and prevent it from becoming too heavy for collection.

What Can't Go In A Green Waste Skip?

There are a few things that you can't put into a green waste skip:

  • Plant pots
  • Ceramics
  • Concrete or bricks
  • Fence panels
  • Sheds

Additionally, 'oversized green waste'—such as root balls, stumps, or anything over 150mm in thickness—can't be included. These materials require further processing at our recycling centre and incur a higher disposal cost. If you have any oversized green waste, please contact us for the cost of disposal.
